How to care for string of pearls?

Pearls are organic gemstones with a soft yet delicate texture. Daily care is crucial to maintain their luster and longevity. Please remember the following four key precautions.

  1. Avoid Submersion in Water
Why Should Pearls Avoid Water Despite Being Born in Water?
Although pearls are formed in water, they actually grow within the mother oyster, encased in the oyster's flesh and protected from water. Finished pearls have tiny pores on their surface that easily absorb moisture.
Moisture can cause the nacre to peel and break.
Water vapor is difficult to evaporate, making stringing susceptible to mold and brittle breakage.
  2. Keep away from oil and dirt. Pearls' micropores easily absorb kitchen fumes and steam, which, over time, can affect their surface luster and cause them to turn yellow and darken. Yellowing solution (minor yellowing only): Soak the pearls in 1%-5% dilute hydrochloric acid for 10-15 seconds. Remove immediately after slight bubbling. Rinse with purified water. Dry with a soft cloth and air dry in the shade. Note: Never use tap water or soak for extended periods. For expensive pearls, it's best to have them treated by a professional jeweler.
  3. Avoid chemicals! Pearls are extremely sensitive to acids and alkalis. The following substances can corrode the surface, causing it to lose its luster, discolor, or even turn black:

    Avoid contact with:

    Vinegar, alcohol, perfume

    Skin care products, cosmetics

Silver/gold washes, and other strong cleaning agents

  4. Keep away from hard objects.
Pearls have a Mohs hardness of 2.5-4.5, making them much softer than most gemstones and metals and easily scratched.
    Recommendation:
Store pearls separately, away from diamonds, gold, or jade. Store in a soft cloth bag or jewelry box to avoid overlapping or contact with hard objects.
