What Determines Pearl Quality?A Guide for Jewelry Designers

Pearl quality is primarily determined by luster, surface quality, shape, size, color, and nacre thickness. Among these, luster is the most important factor affecting value and visual appeal.

The 6 Core Factors of Pearl Quality

1. Luster - Most Important Factor

Pearl luster is the soul of a pearl; it directly determines the preciousness of the jewelry and its wearing effect.

What causes the luster of pearls?

The luster of a pearl comes from the reflection and diffraction of light by the countless layers of tiny aragonite crystals (calcium carbonate) on its surface. The more layers there are, and the more tightly and neatly they are arranged, the stronger the luster.

Traditional freshwater pearls: These were common non-nucleated freshwater pearls in the past (such as rice-grain pearls). Because a single oyster produces multiple pearls, nutrients are dispersed, resulting in a thinner nacre layer and faster growth. Their luster is typically a soft, waxy or silky sheen, with moderate brightness and a lack of sharp reflective points.

Modern high-quality freshwater pearls: Especially with the adoption of nucleated culture techniques (such as Edison pearls), a single oyster produces only one or a few pearls. This concentrates nutrients, resulting in a thicker and denser nacre layer. These pearls can achieve a strong, even mirror-like luster, clearly reflecting a person's image and possessing a strong metallic sheen.

Lack of brilliance

Luster accounts for roughly 35–40% of a pearl’s total value.

How to select good luster pearl?

Observe the reflection: Place the pearl on a white background and observe the reflection of the light source on its surface. The clearer and sharper the image, the better the luster.

Observe by rotation: Slowly rotate the pearl and observe whether the luster flows with the angle (the lively feeling of "pearl brilliance"). A dull luster is usually of poor quality.

2. Surface Quality - Fewer Blemishes, Higher Value

Surface quality is the second most important factor in evaluating a pearl's value (after luster). It directly determines a pearl's clarity, beauty, and durability.

Visual  Cause
Blemishes Any mark, spot, crack, or irregularity on the surface or inside Organic matter trapped during cultivation, damage to the mantle tissue, or damage in the pearl factory.
Growth marks  Linear marks, like fingerprints or tree rings, are on the surface. Interruptions in nacre deposition. Seasonal changes, temperature shifts, or health issues of the oyster cause the nacre layering to pause or change rhythm.
Quality AAAAA Blemishes are almost invisible to the eye

Quality AAAA There are a few minor imperfections on the surface, but they are not visible at a normal social distance (approximately 50cm).

Quality AAA Visible to the eye, but it does not affect the overall aesthetics.

Minor imperfections are common in freshwater pearls and do not necessarily reduce commercial viability.

3. Shape - Round Pearls Are the Most Valuable

Value ranking by shape (from high to low):

  • Round (most valuable)
  • Near-round
  • Oval
  • Button
  • Baroque (irregular, popular for designer jewelry)

Perfectly round pearls command premium pricing due to rarity.

4. Size – Larger Pearls Are Significantly More Valuable

Pearls above 10mm significantly increase in price. For the same quality, a size increase of 1 millimeter can double the price, or even more. Extra-large pearls are rare, so they are very expensive if good quality, good luster, and good shape.

5. Color – Rarity Determines Price

Freshwater pearls come in rich colors. Vivid Colors are more good quality and more expensive. Rare colors, such as metallic colors, are more expensive. The colors are natural; they are not produced. Each batch is a little different in color, so we will send pics to get your color approval first.

6. Nacre Thickness

The nacreous layer is the layer of nacre that surrounds the pearl nucleus. The thickness of the nacreous layer directly determines the lifespan, luster, and value of a pearl.

1. Impact on durability (most critical)

The thickness of the nacre layer directly affects whether a pearl is "durable".

2The effect on luster and overtone (aesthetics)

The luster of a pearl comes from the reflection and refraction of light between the nacreous layers.

3. Impact on value (grading criteria)

In international pearl grading standards, nacre thickness is a mandatory indicator.

-Akoya Standard:
Special Selection/Tennium/Hana-dama: The nacre thickness is typically 0.4mm or more.

-South Sea and Tahitian Pearls: Due to their long cultivation period (2-4 years), the nacre thickness is usually thicker, generally 1mm-3mm or even thicker.

-Freshwater nucleated pearls: Have a nacre thickness between 0.5mm and 2.0mm. High-quality Edison pearls often have a thicker nacre than Akoya saltwater pearls, approaching the thickness of South Sea pearls.
