High-Luster Freshwater Pearls for Jewelry Designers

What is the Pearl Luster? Why Luster Matters?

Pearls grow layer by layer:

  • Each layer consists of (calcium carbonate) platelets that are extremely thin—comparable to the wavelength of visible light;
    - Extremely thin layers of organic matter (conchiolin) are sandwiched between the aragonite platelets;
    - Thousands of these platelets are stacked parallel to one another.
  • When light strikes the surface of a pearl:

    1. Some light reflects directly off the outermost surface;
    2. Other light penetrates the surface layer and reflects again at the interface of the underlying aragonite platelets;
    3. Light reflected from these multiple interfaces undergoes interference and diffraction.

    Light reflected from different layers either reinforces or cancels out, creating a soft, iridescent luster—commonly known as nacreous luster

  • - Neatly arranged, thin, and uniform nacre platelets → High luster and translucency;
    - Thick layers, disordered arrangement, and fissures → Dull luster and a hazy appearance;
    - Insufficient nacre thickness also results in weak luster ("thin-skinned" pearls).
  • Luster directly reflects the quality of the internal aragonite layer structure and determines the pearl's "spirit" or radiance. For pearls of the same size, higher luster signifies higher quality; if the luster is poor, the pearl cannot be considered high-grade, no matter how perfectly round or flawless it may be.

How We Select High-Luster Pearls?

Hold the pearl against a sheet of white paper or near a window:
✅ Good luster: A clear reflection is visible, and the surface displays a shifting, iridescent sheen when rotated.
❌ Poor luster: Dull and hazy (as if veiled in mist), with a flat, lifeless reflection.
